Starting Out
As with all of us, where we are at today is a result of our choices, experiences and upbringing.
My early life was heavily influenced by my parents, especially my father. He was self-employed in the aggregate business with the added struggle of being an amputee. I always respected his work ethic, doing as much as the next guy, despite his disability. My father was a high school drop. Because of that, he encouraged me to go to college. He wanted me to have more options to make a living then what he had.
In 1995 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Chemical Engineering. I have spent most of my professional life working in engineering; most recently as an engineering manager.
My Start of Home Improvement
My passion for home improvement began in 1997. I renovated a small ranch which including installing new laminate flooring in the kitchen and bathroom, refinishing the hardwood floors, and installing new 6 panel doors, along with building storage shelves in the detached garage. I could see that taking care of your space added much value.
Building a Home
In 2006 I took on the challenge of building a home with no prior building experience. I hired out the foundation, plumbing, heating and cooling as well as the drywall. The work I took on myself included the framing (with some help from my awesome neighbor and my father), the electrical, flooring, windows, trim, painting, roofing, siding, bathrooms and kitchen. It was a very rewarding project.
Doing a Fixer-Upper
Most recently, my wife and I purchased a fixer-up in 2019. It was a Sears & Roebuck kit home that was built in 1924.
In this home I completed my first full bathroom remodel including electrical, plumbing, drywall, 3 pieces shower stall and a custom vanity.
I also repaired windows and general painting of both interior and exterior surfaces. The transformation was exceptional.
